Yom Hazikaron and Yom Ha’atzmaut are always on consecutive days. On Yom Hazikaron for the IDF and victims of terror, we commemorate those soldiers, civilians and security forces who put their lives on the line, quite literally, for the greater good of building a Jewish home in the land of Israel. The transition between both days is sharp and without a break. They are deliberately consecutive, designed to experience the deep connection between mourning for our fallen soldiers and together with that hold the celebration of the State of Israel’s establishment. What do these days share? They are, in essence, two sides of one coin.
Rav Listman recounts tales of recent years and profound ideas about why these two days are deeply connected, how the Gevura of our soldiers are part and parcel of our ability to live in our Land, and explore the true halachic nature of Yom Ha’atzmaut in the light of its significance to the vision of the Jewish people.
